The Green Party of New Brunswick is calling on Premier David Alward to immediately hold an emergency meeting with the elected and traditional leadership of all First Nations in New Brunswick following the RCMP assault on what had been a peaceful protest against fracking near Rexton.

Green Party Leader David Coon wrote the Premier two weeks ago urging him to meet with the leadership of Elsipogtog. In his letter, Coon wrote that Elispogtog's decision to assert its stewardship over the surrounding Crown lands presented an opportunity for the Premier to begin a new relationship with First Nations in New Brunswick.

Dear Premier Alward:

In the wake of the resolution of Elsipogtog's Chief and Council to reclaim their stewardship over all unoccupied Crown land in the Signigtog district of the traditional territories of the Mi'kmaq, I am writing to urge you to meet with Chief Arren Sock and his Council at the earliest possible time.

The provincial government has maintained its relationship with First Nations is one of government to government. As you know, First Nations in New Brunswick have always maintained that Crown lands are lands that are held in trust by the Crown on their behalf since they were never ceded by treaty. However, at the same time, the Government of New Brunswick treats these lands as its own.

Green Party Leader David Coon was officially affirmed as the Green candidate for Fredericton South at a nomination meeting held Tuesday night at the Roxstone Café  in Fredericton. Coon was elected Leader of the Green Party in September 2012. Prior to that, Coon worked in Fredericton for the Conservation Council  for 28 years.

"I will work hard to earn the trust of the people of Fredericton South," said Coon. "We can make history and we can make a difference by electing the first Green MLA to the Legislative Assembly next September. I have devoted my career to championing health communities and a healthy environment. It would truly be a privilege to be the people of Fredericton South's champion in the Legislature," said Coon.

Coon, his wife Janice Harvey, and their two daughters Laura and Caroline live in Skyline Acres.

Green Party Leader David Coon wants the New Brunswick government to invest in the CN railway line running from Moncton through Campbellton to avoid the body blow to economy of northern New Brunswick that would come with its abandonment. CN says it will discontinue service by March 2014 unless it governments step forward with $50 million to repair its aging tracks. A wide variety of businesses, including saw mills, blueberry growers and the Port of Belledune depend on the railroad.

"The railway is so essential to our economy, that it was one of the key conditions of New Brunswick joining Canada in confederation, and as a result was entrenched in the constitution," said Coon." It would be a disaster for current businesses operating in Miramichi, the Acadian peninsula, Bathurst and the Chaleur region to lose this vital transportation link to the rest of the world. And it would hobble efforts to build a new green economy in northern New Brunswick," Coon said.

The Green Party of New Brunswick is calling on the Alward government to create a New Brunswick Forest Service to take over responsibility for managing Crown lands from corporate license-holders, and to award those licenses to communities instead.

"When a local sawmill such as Miramichi Lumber Products is being forced to shut down because it is blocked from getting the wood it needs from the local Crown lands, you know the current system has become corrupted," said David Coon, leader of the Green Party of New Brunswick.

Green Party leader David Coon is taking his New Economy Tour to northern New Brunswick via Kent County this week. His first stop will be to show his support for the people of Elsipogtog and Kent County who are have been working to stop shale gas exploitation in their communities.  

The tour will include visits to Lamèque, Caraquet, Bathurst, and Tracadie-Sheila. While in Tracadie-Sheila, Coon will take on Liberal Leader Brian Gallant at a charity softball game Saturday afternoon organized by L'Acadie Nouvelle to benefit l'Arbre de l'espoir.

Bill 39, the Electricity Act bill is one objective short of what was promised in the New Brunswick Energy Blueprint, according to the Green Party. It says environmental responsibility was left out of the section of the proposed law that sets out the electricity policy of government. Debate resumes on the bill this week.

“Like the Harper government, the Alward government finds environmental responsibility inconvenient to its agenda, so it has been left out of the proposed Electricity Act,” said David Coon, Green Party Leader. The Green Party wants the Liberals to introduce an amendment to the bill this week that would entrench environmental responsibility as a policy objective.

The Green Party is calling for the new women’s rights entity that the government will announce today, to be autonomous and adequately funded to carry out its mandate.

“The inequalities experienced by women in New Brunswick cannot be remedied without strategic intervention in a number of areas including income inequality, access to childcare, domestic violence and sexual assault,” said Ayesha Ali, the Green Party's Advocate for the Status of Women. “Appropriate allocation of resources to tackle all of these problems must be a priority for any new entity on women’s issues,” said Ms. Ali.
