Green Party Calls for Urgent Action on Women’s and Gender Diverse Healthcare
October 15, 2024
SAINT JOHN - Today in Saint John, Green Party Deputy Leader Megan Mitton announced the Party’s plan for improving women’s and gender diverse healthcare in New Brunswick.
“Women’s and gender diverse healthcare services have been ignored by successive governments, with no plan to ensure that women have access to the unique care that they need, when they need it,” stated Mitton. “This goes from family planning to perinatal healthcare, while pregnant and after giving birth, to menopause.”
Since opening in 2017, the Fredericton Midwifery Clinic has overseen 271 births, with 99% client satisfaction. A total of 97% of clients strongly agreed that midwifery care should be expanded across New Brunswick. The Higgs government initially withheld a report highlighting these outcomes.
“Despite the amazing success of the Fredericton Midwifery Clinic, seven years later it is still the only midwifery clinic in the province,” said Mitton. “A Green government is committed to expanding midwifery services across all seven health zones.”
Beyond midwifery, the Green Party committed to:
- Establish dedicated women’s and gender diverse health centers for unique needs, including access to abortion services and timely diagnosis for conditions like endometriosis.
- Enhance family planning access by opting into the federal Pharmacare plan to cover contraceptive and diabetes medications.
- Improve transgender healthcare by supporting specialized training for providers.
