A Green government will replace the consumer carbon tax with a cap-and-trade system that is designed to take the burden off you and make industry pay their fair share. We will also eliminate the Higgs gas tax, created by Premier Higgs to allow Irving Oil to pass the costs of cleaning up their fuel on to you.
NB’s current industrial carbon price – designed by Higgs and approved by Trudeau – is too weak. It taxes only a tiny portion of the emissions from big corporations. Meanwhile the average New Brunswicker is paying the carbon tax with no alternatives.
Greens will replace the ineffective consumer carbon tax and weak industrial carbon pricing system with a cap-and-trade system that is designed to take the burden off you and make industry pay their fair share.
Based on Quebec’s cap-and-trade, these changes will save you up to 10 cents per litre on gas, while also strengthening industrial regulations to ensure we meet our climate change goals.
The revenue will be invested to create a provincial rail system connecting to improved bus and transit services.
