Caring for Our Seniors: A Commitment to Dignity and Quality Care

October 11, 2024

RIVERVIEW – Today, Green Party leader David Coon, joined by Riverview candidate Sarah Lord, outlined the Green Party’s plan to address the urgent need for improved senior care.

“Our aging population deserves to age with dignity and receive quality care right in their communities,” Coon stated. “As more and more New Brunswickers are forced to live in hospitals waiting for nursing home care, it’s clear that governments have not held up their end of the bargain.”

Coon outlined the seven priorities for a Green government to ensure that seniors receive the care they need, whether they are able to stay at home or live in a long-term care facility. A Green government will:

  • Ensure that residents in long-term care receive 4.1 hours of care per day.
  • Raise the comfort and clothing allowance and index it to inflation.
  • Cap special care home rates at $80 dollars per day.
  • Expand Nursing Homes Without Walls program province-wide.
  • Restore the Primary Informal Caregiver Benefit.
  • Implement the long-promised dementia strategy.
  • End government bias against community-based non profit nursing homes.

“A Green government will make investments to ensure seniors receive the care they need, where they need it and when they need it,” Coon added. “Everybody deserves to live with dignity.”
