About Rebecca Blaevoet

Rebecca Blaevoet is a business owner, gardener, artisanal cheesemaker and musician.

The fire of activism was first kindled during high school when Rebecca read Yesterday the Children Were Dancing by Gratien Gélinas. With a thoroughly Anglophone upbringing, her eyes were opened to other perspectives and a world of cultural and political debate. She never looked back. Majoring in Slavic Studies at the University of Ottawa, a university she chose for the chance to study in either official language, she has travelled extensively, lived in the US and Britain, and now makes her home in Western New Brunswick with her husband, on their dream farm.

It was in graduate school in Vancouver in the late 80s that she began to develop an interest in food insecurity and sustainable living.

For thirty-five years, activism has also included work in the field of blindness. Rebecca has taught independence skills to children and adults, and now co-owns a braille publishing company where the advocacy is for access to information. She loves bookkeeping!

When she and her husband arrived in New Brunswick in 2019 and saw the prices of produce in the stores, she made the decision, finally, to get involved in the Green Party. With its emphasis on ecological wisdom, sustainable living, participatory democracy  and respect for diversity, it was an easy choice. She helped canvas in the 2020 snap election and served as the policy working group chair and in various capacities on Provincial Council.

She was riding treasurer until someone asked if she would run as a candidate in Carleton North, the regional district just above where she lives, in Windsor, not far from Florenceville-Bristol.
