Greens Commit to Building a Shippagan-Lamèque Bridge
September 28
LAMÈQUE – Today, during a press conference in Lamèque, Green Party Leader David Coon committed to building a new bridge connecting Shippagan and Lamèque. He was joined by Green Party candidate for Shippagan-Les-Îles Wilfred Roussel, and Green Party Candidate for Tracadie, Serge Brideau.
“Since 2020, I have been advocating for a modern and safe bridge to connect the islands of Lamèque and Miscou to the mainland at Shippagan,” stated Coon. “It’s vital that residents of island communities have reliable connections to the mainland to ensure access to services and opportunities.”
The existing bridge, built in 1959, serves around 10,000 daily travelers and is nearing the end of its lifespan. Progress has stalled since the bridge was first identified to be replaced in 2018, resulting in millions spent on temporary fixes.
Coon also highlighted the urgent need to address coastal erosion affecting communities like nearby Le Goulet, exacerbated by climate change. He announced a Green government will create a climate risk reduction fund to protect vulnerable areas from flooding and severe weather.
“A Green government will establish a coastal protection office to safeguard communities and infrastructure along New Brunswick’s 2,250 km coastline,” added Coon. “We, the Greens, are committed to standing by our communities against the impacts of climate change.”
