July 2025 Newsletter

Happy Canada Day!

Canada was founded on the principles of Peace, Order, and Good Government. These common values define us as Canadians and they are worth celebrating. Around the world, we are witnessing the rise of authoritarianism and dangerously escalating conflicts. With all the chaos going on in the world we may feel fortunate to live in Canada, but we cannot afford to become complacent here at home.

In Ottawa, the Liberals and Conservatives have joined forces to grant Prime Minister Carney and his cabinet sweeping powers to override environmental legislation and sideline Indigenous consultation. All this government overreach in the name of fast-tracking what they define as “nation-building projects”

Both Liberal and Conservative governments–especially those of Trudeau and Harper–have consolidated more and more power in the Prime Minister’s office, eroding the norms of democratic accountability and responsible government.

While the Trump administration openly defies the rule of law south of the border, we must remain vigilant here in Canada and hold our governments accountable to those founding principles of Peace, Order, and Good Government that define Canadian democracy.

We should be proud to be Canadian, but we must not take for granted what sets Canada apart from other countries. We are a nation of nations living on shared Indigenous lands. Our cultural mosaic only works when we continue to respect and uphold the laws and institutions that allow us to live peacefully together.

The real nation-building project is the ongoing work of perfecting those laws and institutions for the benefit of all Canadians–now and for generations to come.

Sincerely,

your Green Team

RDA Executives Update

Leading up to this year’s spring AGM, we developed several staff recommendations based on feedback from our RDA Executive members. Thank you to those executives who completed our survey and participated in the roundtable discussions at our AGM! Your valuable input helps us to strengthen our party from the ground up.

We are excited to be working with our RDA executive members to implement those staff recommendations. Most recently, we held our first province-wide RDA executives meeting of 2025. There, we outlined our staff recommendations and our plan to implement them together with your help.

Our next province-wide RDA executives meeting will be held on September 24 at 7pm via Zoom. If you are an executive member of your RDA, stay tuned for an invitation.

Being a member of the Green Party of New Brunswick automatically makes you a member of your local riding RDA (Registered District Association). RDA members elect their RDA executives to help grow the party at the grassroots level by planning events, recruiting new members, volunteers, and candidates, and fundraising to prepare for election campaigns.

If you’d like to be more involved and join your RDA executive team, ask us about how you can run for an executive position on your local riding association. There is no experience necessary and we are currently developing better training and resources to set you up for success.

Become a member or renew your membership today!

MLAs in Action

David Coon and Megan Mitton accomplished a lot in the last legislative session. Green Party Leader David Coon’s Bill 19: An Act Respecting the Right to a Healthy Environment successfully moved forward to the Law Amendments Committee. Later this fall, public hearings will be scheduled to allow expert witnesses and First Nations to provide input for the committee’s consideration. After public hearings conclude, the bill can then be reintroduced with the committee’s recommendations for a third and final reading and debate in the Legislature.

The latest legislative session included significant progress on a number of issues that David and Megan have been working on. Megan received unanimous support for an amendment to make free 90-day radon gas test kits accessible to the public. Other long-time Green Party initiatives came to fruition as well, such as the Standing Committee on Official Languages first proposed by former Green MLA Kevin Arseneau in 2019, a permanent rent cap proposed by David in 2018, and the adoption of a permanent legislative calendar.

Finally, in case you missed it, check out our video of David and Megan taking the train to demonstrate the disconnect in New Brunswick’s public transportation infrastructure. Make sure to sign our petition calling on the Holt government to put a minister in charge of public transportation and implement the long-overdue Transportation Strategy.
