Green Party Unveils Plan for New Brunswick’s Heritage Buildings
September 24, 2024
MEMRAMCOOK - Today at the Memramcook Institute, Green Party Leader David Coon unveiled the Green Party’s commitment to create a comprehensive Heritage Plan that will recognize the public, cultural, and tourism value of our heritage buildings, covered bridges, and lighthouses.
“This plan will prioritize the preservation and celebration of New Brunswick’s rich historical and cultural assets such as buildings, our covered bridges, and our lighthouses,” said Coon. “We have rich heritage assets all over the province that have been left to deteriorate rather than be preserved and restored.”
Green Party Deputy Leader Megan Mitton has advocated for the Memramcook Institute’s public use over the past six years as MLA. Through a recent right-to-information request, Mitton discovered that the building was sold off to a private developer for only $1 million.
“Such an important piece of Acadian heritage was sold by the Higgs government for next to nothing, with the information of the sale then hidden from the public. Unacceptable,” said Megan Mitton. “A Green government would buy it back at the first opportunity, and ensure it benefits the public. We certainly don’t want it to sit empty; it needs to serve the community while honouring its history.”
