Letter from the Leader

"The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice"

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said this often during the long struggle for civil rights in the United States.  David Boyd, the former UN Rapporteur on human rights and the environment, shared it with many of the people who have been campaigning for a right to a healthy environment for New Brunswickers following the defeat of my bill.

Ironically, just days after the vote, CBC ran a story about Charlo’s municipal drinking water supply being contaminated with PFAS, the forever chemicals that accumulate the more they are consumed. The Minister of Health told me his Department was aware of the problem last December, but community members were not informed until the end of February.  Why the delay? How long had they been drinking contaminated water? Had PFAS previously been detected in the groundwater that supplies the town’s wells? What recourse do the residents have?  The answers to most of these questions would already be known if we had a right to a healthy environment in our province.

This latest case of environmental injustice only strengthens the resolve of our caucus to fight for environmental justice in the Legislature. My heart goes out to the people of Charlo, who must be anxious, angry and feeling adrift.  New Brunswickers desperately need a right to a healthy environment.  Megan Mitton and I will find a way to enshrine that right into law.  We have campaigned for it in multiple elections, and we will not give up the fight.

You can read more of my thoughts on the rejection of Bill 23 by Liberals and Tories alike here.

The Legislature is in session until mid-June. Megan and I will continue to do our best to be the voice of reason and to represent those who feel unrepresented and unheard, including all the beautiful creatures who inhabit our province.

We are holding our Annual General Meeting in Shediac from June 12–14.  If you are not a member, I encourage you to attend as an observer to meet Greens from every corner of New Brunswick.  It’s a chance to find out what we are all about.  Join us.
