Green Party Plan to Create a Universal School Food Program

October 3, 2024

FREDERICTON - This morning Green Party leader David Coon committed that a Green government will create a Universal School Food breakfast and lunch program.

“All too often I have heard stories about teachers who have spent their own money to ensure students in their classes don’t go hungry,” said Coon. “While this is commendable, we need a proper province-wide school breakfast and lunch program in place to ensure that teachers can focus on what they do best, teaching, and students can focus on learning.”

Coon went on to explain that the program would be funded through negotiations with the federal government, which would amount to at least $4 million per year on a per-capita basis for the province. It would also receive funding by ending the “free lunch” for large forestry corporations – putting an end to the $20 million dollar a year subsidies provided to them for herbicide spraying and tree planting.

“A Green government will make smart investments in our children’s future to ensure they are well nourished and put in the best position possible to succeed in school. We are ending the free lunch for billion dollar corporations and providing free lunches to our kids,” Coon concluded.
