August 2025 Newsletter

The world is such a tumultuous place right now and we are living with high levels of uncertainty - from the trade war with Trump to the accelerating climate crisis. If you feel overwhelmed or hopeless, I’m here to remind you that you are not alone. You’re not the only one finding the endless crises hard to stomach, and you’re not the only one working to fix things.

While we face significant challenges, as Greens, we have key principles that guide us and we put forward real solutions. There is a lot that is within our control:

  • We must build renewable energy with batteries, not fracked gas plants (Principle 1: Living within our Ecological Means)
  • We must prioritize our local economy and food sovereignty, by supporting our local farmers to grow food to feed New Brunswickers (currently, we grow only ~10% of our own vegetables!) (Principle 2: Local Self-Reliance)
  • We must implement the recommendations in the final reports of NB’s Systemic Racism Commissioner, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Report, and the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls and 2SLGBTQQIA people. We must also stop letting billionaires call the shots, and tackle economic inequality, which is on the rise in Canada (Principle 4: Social Justice and Equality)

While we work to transform our province, we can also celebrate the beauty and diversity of New Brunswick. I just took the train across the province, and the breathtaking beauty, from Campbellton to Bathurst, and from Mirimichi down the coast, was a reminder of how lucky we are to live in New Brunswick.

This month I hope you have an opportunity to celebrate New Brunswick’s rich culture. On August 1st, we recognize Emancipation Day (which I’m proud that our leader, David Coon, helped ensure is now officially recognized in NB). I’m excited to celebrate New Brunswick in Tantramar over the long weekend by checking out the Cape Tormentine Beach Music Festival and SappyFest 20. My family will also be visiting St. Andrews and Grand Manan (and the kids are looking forward to the ferry ride). And I can’t wait to make some noise on Quinzou in the Shediac/Cap-Acadie area.

Whether or not our paths cross this summer, I hope you have a wonderful August!

In solidarity,

Megan Mitton

Deputy Leader and Green MLA for Tantramar

MLAs in Action

Megan spoke out about the proposed fracked gas plant in Tantramar. Owned by a private American company, the proposed fossil fuel project would lock NB Power into burning costly fracked gas for at least the next 25 years. Megan has written to Environment Minister Gilles LePage requesting a comprehensive environmental impact assessment with provisions for public consultations to get a picture of the true environmental and social cost of the project.

In July David attended the launch of the City of Fredericton's physician recruitment strategy. The number of people in Fredericton with a family doctor or nurse practitioner has reached an all-time low at 63.5%. David said that access to healthcare is at a crisis point and must be treated as such by Horizon’s senior management and the Department of Health.

Earlier this week, David and Megan met in Shediac for their annual summer caucus meeting to chart a course for the upcoming legislative session which begins in October. They discussed how to build support for Green solutions to some of the most urgent issues facing New Brunswickers, including access to healthcare, high property taxes and power rates, and devastating effects of the climate crisis.

David’s Bill 19 An Act Respecting the Right to a Healthy Environment, will also proceed to the next step ahead of the next session, when it goes for public hearings at the Law Amendments Committee in September. Stay tuned for more details on those hearings in our September newsletter.
